Title Research: Thriller

We chose the thriller film Se7en for this blog from the website http://www.watchthetitles.com/.

1.      What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

During the opening sequence of Seven, full names of actors and crew members of the movie were shown on the screen. The title of the movie was also featured. This is normal and typically shown in many films.

2.      What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

Distorted images of books, recorded information, and photos were prioritized in this opening sequence. The images were also a series of writing motions by a hand with a pen. This may represent foreshadowing in the film. These images were also dark and creepy to see as they dissolved into the next picture.

3.      What connotations do these images carry?

The connotations these images carry were extremely negative and disturbing. As you watched you would only get an unsettling feeling as you continue.

4.      How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

From the first second, of the opening sequence, the music itself is alarming and worrisome. This feeling only intensifies along with the sequence because the images on the screen show signs of psychological issues and obsession. These factors are usually found in thriller films, so it is no surprise that this film represents them in the first two minutes. As the opening shows a hand crossing out the eye of a child and underling words from a book the audience is only left with suspense and curiosity.

5.      What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The editing used to make the sequence darker and increasingly unsettling. This causes the audience to build up anxiety and the opening sequence looks more insane. The titles on the screen are also made to look distorted to add to the unsafe mood the audience is getting. The loud sinister music keeps the audience awake and observant.

6.      How has technology been used effectively?

Technology has been used effectively using dissolving images between slow motions until the opening is over. The technology was used effectively by the moving pictures appearing dark and gloomy. Overall, the editing and sound made the opening sequence a success and interesting.
